How to compress an image

  1. 1Drop one or more JPG, PNG or WebP images into the box above, or click to pick them.
  2. 2Set the quality. Around 70% usually looks the same as the original but is much smaller. Optionally set a max width to downscale large photos.
  3. 3Choose an output format. Keep the original format, or switch to WebP or JPG for the smallest files.
  4. 4Click Compress and compare the size before and after for each file.
  5. 5Download files one by one, or all at once as a ZIP archive.

Questions and answers

How much smaller will my images get? +

It depends on the image. Photos straight from a phone or camera often shrink a lot at 60–80% quality, especially if you also set a max width. Images that were already compressed may only shrink a little.

Why did my PNG not get smaller? +

PNG is lossless, so re-saving it at the same size rarely helps. Convert it to WebP or JPG, or reduce its width. If a result would be bigger than the original, the tool keeps the original file.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere? +

No. Compression runs in your browser with the Canvas API. The files never leave your device.

Does compression remove EXIF data? +

Yes. Re-encoding through the canvas drops metadata such as camera model and GPS location, which is useful for privacy before sharing photos. The only exception is a file the tool keeps unchanged because compressing it would not make it smaller.

Can I compress many images at once? +

Yes. Add as many images as you like, compress them in one go and download them together as a ZIP file.
